Upper Dewey Lake Hike

If you’re up for a challenge that delivers stunning alpine payoff, then Upper Dewey Lake is the hike for you. It's steep, it's sweaty, and it's absolutely worth every step.

Trail Snapshot:

  • Level: Strenuous
  • Distance: 6.5 miles round trip
  • Time Required: 4 to 6 hours
  • Elevation Gain: Over 3,000 feet
  • Trailhead: Same as Lower Dewey – 2nd Ave and Broadway
  • Cruise-Friendly: Maybe – if you’ve got a full day in port and start early

The Climb Is Real… and So Are the Views

The trail begins at the same spot as Lower Dewey but keeps on going… up. And up. And up.

Switchbacks guide you through thick forest that thins into alpine meadows as you gain elevation. Eventually, you'll break into a clearing with panoramic views and find yourself at Upper Dewey Lake, a pristine glacier-fed lake surrounded by craggy peaks and silence so pure it hums.

The Devil’s Punch Bowl – Bonus Round

If you’re not too winded, continue on another 1.5 miles to the Devil’s Punch Bowl, a glacial cirque filled with icy blue water and eerie beauty. It’s a bit of a scramble, but totally worth it if you have the time.

What to Bring:

  • 2+ liters of water
  • High-energy snacks or lunch
  • Waterproof jacket or rain shell
  • Extra layers (temperatures drop at elevation)
  • Trekking poles
  • Bug spray, sunglasses, and sunscreen
  • Camera

Local Tips:

  • Start early – especially if you’re on a cruise
  • There’s a public-use cabin at the lake (first come, first serve)
  • Weather can change fast – snow is possible even in July

Getting There:

Same as Lower Dewey: Walk from downtown to 2nd Ave and Broadway. Head east to the wooden stairs at the trailhead. From there, follow signs up and beyond Lower Dewey.

Can You Do It in a Day?

Yes – but only if you're fit, prepared, and off the ship early. You’ll need a solid 5–6 hour window and must pace yourself carefully.

Bottom Line:

Upper Dewey Lake is a rite of passage for Skagway hikers. It's tough, wild, and one of the most rewarding experiences you can have in just a few hours. Add the Devil’s Punch Bowl if you're feeling strong—and you’ll take home a memory few tourists get to brag about.
